Standing up offroad: what really happens to your center of gravity
To train with me go to BretTkacs.com
So often viewers comment on my videos that I don't understand the concept of "center of gravity" or more properly center of mass, when I comment on the advantages and disadvantages of standing on your motorcycle when riding off-road. This is a video rant to explain when so many miss in those other videos

So we are on one-way streets, or why can we use the whole width of the road? On public roads I have to consider another rider coming in the opposite direction. And that enforces me to stay off the left part of the street. So for right hand corners - do not cut anything, just stay parallel to the right edge of the street. Anything else is gambling, dangerous.🙀

Went for my first off-road ride wearing my new Tech 7's today. Other than having to relearn how to shift I find these boots very comfortable and obviously they are very nice when standing. I am coming from Sidi Adventure 2's, which are now relegated to evening tarmac rides where the end point is a coffee shop.

Trailbraking myth #1 "keeping the brake light on, will not slow the bike down" Trailbraking myth #2 "you can trailbrake at any speed". Not true! Trailbraking only works when there's is speed to scrub. Therefore requiring to approach every corner at overspeed. Most instructors "forget" that pesky little detail...

Thank you for the tips. I got my first motorcycle ever this year it is the 24 KLR 650. Right now when I ride the dirt county roads I feel like I am on riding on ice. I have only ridden road bikes (pedal). Every so often I have had to cross a patch of ice on 23mm tires so I naturally stay straight up and coast across. I feel this right now on the dirt roads. I don’t want to make any sudden movements thinking that the bike will come out from underneath me. I am really trying to stay relaxed but collected and telling myself the bike knows what it is doing.

30 to 50mph with a light grip sounds great until you hit that deep sand patch and the bars sway violently and the front wheel tucks in and you go down... or when you hit that wet patch that is actually soapy mud and the tires just slip out from right under you and bike goes horizontal in mid air. Mud and sand ugghhh

Bret, always good when you are trying to set the record straight! I wish teachers would start talking about INERTIA. That is the thing that makes the difference during active motion. Decoupling your mass from the bike's (by standing) results in a lower inertia of the bike (your mass doesn't need to move when the bike's moves, up/down OR rotating over obstacles). In relation to movement, inertia is the thing that matters, and is why a higher center of gravity makes leaning harder (same weight farther away from the contact patch takes more effort). Watch a figure skater in a spin - the farther out the arms go, the more inertia, and the slower they spin. Same mass, changing moment of inertia.

Uh, I ride a motorcycle exclusively because it is way more economical than a car. It's actually not a whole lot of fun to ride a motorcycle. You have to suit up and suit down, and you experience all the wind and weather, and it's way more dangerous than just hopping a car and going. You trade off all these hardship for the fuel economy and easier maintenance, and cheaper parts. If this guy is riding a motorcycle and spending way more than if he were driving a car, he bought a very wrong motorcycle.

Great video! I have a 2014 GSA with stock bars. I’m 5’8” with a 30” inseam. My hands go numb within minutes of riding. I’ve ridden the R18 and no numbness. It feels like my GSA’s handlebars sit low and because I’m on the low setting of my seat, I seem to be resting my weight on the bars. What would you recommend? I’ve owned the bike for 10 years, but have always had my hands go numb from day one. Thank you!!!

Have done al lot of tires but after fighting the front tyre of an old bmw r1150rt for half an hour, I decided to consult your video. Taking the tyre off was easy as well as putting it almost back on. Your advice to use sockets made the difference between a possible and impossible job. I realized the tyre needed extra space to make the last jump and the sockets ( use small ones!!) made the last part easy as well. Many thanks from Holland!

Any single rider under 200 lbs.. anything over 33 psi is to much.. 36 psi is death trap traction.. 42 psi is mental retardation at best. 18-33 psi is the ideal range depending on other factors.. if your over 200 lbs or 2 riders..yeah 36 psi IN THE REAR is good but I would never go above 36 psi. The recommended 42 psi is unfounded retardation. If you wish to drift through the intersection at 9 mph and crash use 42 psi.

Trail breaking was perhaps the most important aspect of improving my riding, and should be taught in all "Basic rider courses". It will improve your confidence in cornering 10 fold, as well as adding that safety factor and when applied you have so much more control than engine braking especially when seconds count.
